Brewer Childers - 1908-1996
Leroy Childers was drafted on November 2, 1942. He entered the Army at Camp Shelby, MS and joined Company C, 55th Armored Engineer Battalion, 10th Armored Division around mid-November 1942. He served with the division at Fort Benning, Tennessee Maneuver area, Camp Gordon, and in France, Belgium, and Germany. He remained with the Division until it inactivated in October 1945. He was discharged in November 1945. He died in Tupelo, Mississippi on May 3, 1985 at the age of 67. He is buried at Little Hope Cemetery, near Falkner, Mississippi.
Lesley Wallace Childers, Army, entered the service in October 1940. He received training at Ft. Lewis, Washington. He was sent overseas in Sept. 1944 to Europe. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Childers, Ripley, Miss. He is married to the former Lois Dickerson. He attended the Finger Line School. Discharged recently. (World War II - Tippah Countians In the Service - 1941-1947, p. 37). Battles and Campaigns - Northern France; Rhineland; Central Europe; Decorations: American Defense Service Medal; American Theater Service Medal European; African Middle Eastern Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal; Victory Medal. Discharged 15 Nov. 1945. Died 24 November 1997 and buried at Little Hope Cemetery, Falkner, Mississippi.

Gilbert Perry Childers, Navy entered the service on November 18, 1943. Received basic training at San Diego, Calif. Went overseas on USS Franklin (CV 13) to the Pacific Area. Awarded the Victory medal, Asiatic Pacific medal with 4 Stars, Philippine Liberation medal with 1 star, Good Conduct medal. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Childers, Ripley, Rt. 5. Attended the Finger Line School. Discharged Jan. 28, 1947. Gilbert was aboard the USS Franklin when it was bombed on March 19, 1945. He did not abandon ship but stayed on until it returned under its own power to the east coast. Gilbert is the only sibling living. He is retired from the U.S. Air Force and lives in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Click on photo for larger view) There is a feature story on the USS Franklin in World War II, March 1995, p. 49ff. Lieutenant Commander Joseph O'Callahan was a Chaplain aboard the Franklin and was the only chaplain to received the Medal of Honor during World War II. He has a published diary but is out of print. His nephew, Jay O'Callahan, a professional storyteller has written some stories about his uncle and the Franklin.
Gillis Terry Childers, Navy, entered the service on November 4, 1943. Received training at San Diego, Calif. Went overseas to the Pacific medal and the Victory medal. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Childers, Ripley, Miss. Attended the Finger Line School Discharged Jan. 1, 1946 at Nashville, Tenn. Gillis was born 21 Nov. 1925. He never married. He died 1 February 1961 at the Veteran's Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama at the age of 36. He is buried at the Little Hope Cemetery near Falkner, Mississippi.
Leonard Franklin Childers, Army, entered the service and received his discharge March 17, 1942. He was born 16 April 1915 at Ashland, Mississippi. He never married. He died 8 January 1959 at the Veterans Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama at the age of 44. He is buried at the Little Hope Cemetery near Falkner, Mississippi.
